Comprising of 57 maps, a general map of England and Wales, a plan of London, and 55 maps of the counties and islands, arranged alphabetically and divided into unions. Note beneath the maps” Drawn and engraved for Lewis' topographical dictionary”. Maps are hand colored in outline, some are folding. Showing administrative boundaries, cities, Boroughs, towns, roads, railroads, buildings, landmarks, rivers, canals, and bridges. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian: Greenwich. Bound in olive embossed cloth, with gilt lettering on spine reads “Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary of England and Wales. Atlas”. Samuel Lewis and Co. was based in London. Samuel Lewis the elder died in 1865. His son of the same name predeceased him in 1862. Frame is old and slightly spilt on the side, still displays nicely. It is under glass and measures approx 16 3/4 x 12 3/4 ANTIQUE MAPS BY J & C WALKERMap Makers J & C Walker J. & C. Walker was the imprint used by the Walker family of engravers and printers. They produced numerous high-quality geographical maps and nautical charts for a variety of institutions in the nineteenth century. John Walker (1787-1873) held the position of Hydrographer to the East India Company, a position also held by his father and namesake. John worked in partnership with his brothers, Charles and Alexander. The brothers published over 200 maps for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. They produced maps for James Horsburgh and the Admiralty, as well as the influential Indian Atlas. Purchased at HARRODS in 1984, this is an original antique. I apologize for the glare from the glass.
