Additional Information With a population of over one hundred thousand by 1900, this depiction of the city’srecently installed electric rail line was produced by the Travel and Hotel Bureau of Los Angeles and used by tourists and new Angelenos alike. By this map’s publication, the cities cable cars, which had proliferated during the 1880s and 1890s, had been replaced by the more affordable electric lines, and tourists and residents were able to access most of the city by rail. Multiple lines crossed the city and expanded access to numerous points of interest throughout Los Angeles. The discovery of oil in 1892 had sparked an economic and population boom, and by 1823 the city produced nearly one-quarter of the world’s oil. The completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913 relieved the strain the city’s water supply had experienced due to rapid population growth coupled with the region’s naturally arid climate. In 1920 Hollywood was annexed into Los Angeles and was home to ten movie production companies. By 1921 more than eighty percent of the world’s film industry was found in Los Angeles and would become the iconic industry that would give Los Angeles a global celebrity itself. The enormous revenues generated by the film industry kept Los Angeles from experiencing many of the financial repercussions caused by the Great Depression, and the population exceeded one million by 1930. The distinctive style of this production immediately transports the viewer back in time and is an authentic piece of American cartographical history.
