Description: AGAVE DESMETTIANA VARIEGATA IS AN EASY TO GROW, LOW MAINTENANCE, EVERGREEN PERRENIAL SUCCULENT THAT IS MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS STRIPED CENTURY PLANT OR VARIEGATED AGAVE. THIS AGAVE IS PERFECT TO ADD COLOR, TEXTURE AND INTEREST TO ANY GARDEN LANDSCAPE. ANOTHER INTERESTING FEATURE IS THAT THERE ARE DIFFERENT VARIATIONS OF THIS AGAVE. NOTABLY, ONE VARIETY HAS SOFT SPINES ALONG THE MARGINS OF THE LEAF WITH A TERMINAL SPIKE/THORN, WHILE ANOTHER VARIETY HAS SMOOTH LEAVES ALONG THE MARGINS WITH A TERMINAL SPIKE/THORN. ALTHOUGH NOT TECHNICALLY A TRUE CACTUS, IT HAS MANY OF THE TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CACTUS SUCH AS DROUGHT TOLERANCE, LOW MAINTENANCE, AND EASY CARE. THIS AGAVE IS A BEAUTIFUL SLOW GROWING SUCCULENT THAT IS NATIVE TO MEXICO BUT IS QUITE HAPPY GROWING IN MOST SUB-TROPICAL TO TROPICAL LOCATIONS. USDA HARDINESS ZONES 9-11 ARE IDEAL LOCATIONS TO GROW DESMETTIANA. THE COLORATION IS BEAUTIFUL, WITH GREEN LEAVES THAT HAVE YELLOW STRIPED MARGINS. THE LEAVES ARE ARRANGED IN A ROSETTE THAT CAN GROW UP TO 3 FEET TALL AND UP TO 4 FEET WIDE. WHEN THIS AGAVE IS FULLY MATURE, A CENTRAL SHOOT WILL EMERGE FROM THE CENTER OF THE PLANT. THE SHOOT WILL BLOOM FLOWERS THAT WILL TRANSFORM INTO MANY YOUNG AGAVE PLANTLETS THAT CAN BE USED TO PROPAGATE MORE PLANTS. THIS AGAVE CAN BE GROWN INDOORS IN A SUNNY, WELL LIGHTED WINDOW. ALTERNATIVELY, IT IS MORE COMMONLY GROWN OUTDOORS WHERE IT MAKES AN EXCELLENT LANDSCAPE, ROCK GARDEN OR POTTED PLANT ARRANGEMENT THAT DOES BEST IN TERRA-COTTA PLANTER POTS. PLANTING DESMETTIANA ALONG COASTAL AREAS NEAR OCEANS ARE FINE BECAUSE THIS SUCCULENT IS SALT TOLERANT. SOIL SHOULD BE WELL DRAINING WITH AN ACID TO NEUTRAL PH ALTHOUGH DESMETTIANA IS VERY ADAPTABLE TO ALKALINE SOIL CONDITIONS AS SEEN IN FLORIDA. FULL SUN IS PREFERRED BUT THIS AGAVE WILL LOOK EXCELLENT IN FILTERED LIGHT OR PART SHADED CONDITIONS WHICH HELP TO PREVENT LEAF BURN IF YOUR SUNLIGHT IS INTENSE. REGULAR IRRIGATION IS NOT NECESSARY BUT WILL NOT HURT DESMETTIANA IF THE SOIL IS WELL DRAINING AND WATER DOES NOT POOL AROUND THE ROOT SYSTEM. MOST AGAVES DO NOT LIKE "WET FEET" WHICH CAN RESULT IN ROOT ROT. FERTILIZER IS UNNECESSARY WHICH MAKES THIS AN EXCELLENT LOW MAINTENANCE ATTRACTIVE GARDEN PLANT.
