A SOUTHERN WOMAN'S STORY - MEMOIR OF NURSE - LIFE IN CONFEDERATE RICHMOND - NEW

Description: A SOUTHERN WOMAN’S STORY LIFE IN CONFEDERATE RICHMOND INCLUDING UNPUBLISHED LETTERS WRITTEN FROM THE CHIMBORAZO HOSPITAL BY PHOEBE YATES PEMBER Edited by Bell Irwin Wiley MINT CONDITION This book is brand new, unread and in pristine condition. Sharp, Bright, Clean, Solidly Bound, New Book Loaded with Wonderful Illustrations Excellent Memoir of a Confederate Nurse PUBLISHED IN 1991 The late Douglas Southall Freeman, distinguished author of R.E. Lee and Lee’s Lieutenants, has called Mrs. Pember’s book one of the finest of the Confederate memoirs. Her account as matron of Chimborazo Hospital in besieged Richmond is written with merciless realism. She tells the scandals, the gossip, the greed and selfishness, along with the self-sacrifice and valor, and needless suffering of soldiers and civilians in the dark age of medicine. “A Southern Woman’s Story…would be heartbreaking,” said Dr. Freeman, “were it not written with such odd humor.” Later he said, “If historians have lapsed since Mrs. Pember’s time in realistic treatment of the war, the fault is assuredly not hers.” Typical of the many fascinating accounts are of the wife who followed her wounded husband to Chimborzao Hospital and had a baby in his bed…the barrel of whiskey that became the hero of the story…Mrs. Jefferson Davis’ proclivity to gossip…the brutal conspiracies against women who usurped the male’s prerogative of nursing in hospitals of that day…of a strange proposal of marriage by a wounded soldier…of the soldier’s letters from home which were mixtures of ignorance, bad grammar, worse spelling and simple feeling. However absurd the style, the love that filled them, chastened and purified them. Such a tale made A Southern Woman’s Story outstanding among Civil War books. This rare and long out-of-print narrative has been compared to Mary Boykin Chestnut’s famous Diary form Dixie. In many respects, the two women were alike. Each knew intimately the leading men and women or Richmond and the Confederacy. Each came from a prominent aristocratic Southern family. Each was a woman of wit who wrote with charm and originality. Unlike the Chestnut diary, Mrs. Pember’s story was uncensored in its original publication. Nothing was omitted – event that which might outrage Southern sentiment. This may account for the extremely limited sale of the first and only previous edition, published in 1879. Published here for the first time are numerous letters written by Mrs. Pember – mostly from the hospital. These add much new material to the original account of her experiences and to our knowledge of life among the great and near-great in wartime Richmond. This is a brand new, unread, pristine-condition book. It comes in a brand new dust jacket. The book is brand new and has no shortcomings. Sample book shown; you book is brand new and comes in the original, publisher's shrink wrap. There isn’t a mark in the book and the pages are clean and bright white. The book is clean, sharp, bright, and solidly bound throughout. It is filled with wonderful illustrations in addition to its wonderful text. A wonderful, brand-new book.
