Description: COLONIAL KNIFE CO. Melon Tester, Long Stainless Pocketknife, Vintage: Not a common pattern, a melon tester (and its slightly shorter brother, the sausage-tester) are used by wholesale buyers to sample a sales-lot of products. A melon, or several, is cut open in the field, visually inspected and usually tasted. Sausage is usually sampled in a test-kitchen by the same method. Many suppliers and merchants give away the knives as advertising promotional gifts to buyers, and this knife is one of those. The advertiser is Northwest Grinding and Supply in Chicago, coincidentally two blocks from where I started my printing career at 875 W. Washington Blvd. But I digress...The knives were always made from stainless steel because they were used for cutting food products and could be safely washed and sterilized so as not to contaminate other products they tested. The "Northwestern" knife, like many other advertisers, was never used and still carries the factory polish and grind. One flaw on front handle, a chip from an apparent fall. Mailing only to USA-48. Postage is usually between $5.00 and $6.26. Buyer pays $4.00, I will pay the rest. Please see my other knives and save postage. I am liquidating my entire collection; please keep me in your favorite sellers, watching for Old Bryan's Old Knives or the seller name below.
