NUMBER: 333 / 650 Certificate of Authenticity is included This print was published back in 1994 - 30 years ago! They are not easy to find. They were published with only the artist’s signature. Surely just a handful managed to be signed by D-Day veterans. This is one of the few - completely unique - one-of-a-kind!!! I like this image a lot because did a great job with the color so it’s an appealing image but still looks like night! Many night scenes are unconvincing. This one is spot-on. It is 12:30 a.m. on D-Day, June 6, 1944. By the light of a full moon, C-47s from the 89th troop carrier squadron, 438th troop carrier group, pass swiftly over the Normandy countryside. These aircraft are among a total of 850 C-47s taking over 15,000 troops to begin assault in the D-Day invasion. General Dwight E. Eisenhower declared the Douglas C-47 one of the few pieces of equipment "vital to our success in Africa and Europe." The aircraft itself, however, would have meant nothing without the fearless airborne forces, who at the signal "Green light, Jump!" parachuted into battle. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Ed Shames, I’m sure you’ll agree he was a colorful character! He seemed a little gruff at first, but if you had the chance to chat with him, he was a nice man who was more than happy to share his World War 2 experiences with you. His biography is called “Airborne - The Combat Story of Ed Shames of Easy Company”. Shames was from the Virginia Beach area, and so was Norwood Thomas, another 101st WW2 soldier. They appeared together a few times at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. Norwood Thomas parachuted into Normandy on D-Day. He also did a glider assault into Holland as part of Market Garden. Norwood Thomas was also a great guy, definitely more reserved than Ed Shames, but also a great source of WW2 experiences. Shames enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 25, 1942. He read about and applied for duty with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was sent to Toccoa, Georgia, for training, starting as a private in I Company, 3rd Battalion of the 506th. In England, Shames was promoted to Operations Sergeant. He built the sand tables the airborne unit used in planning the airdrop into Normandy. Shames made his first combat jump into Normandy on D-Day as part of Operation Overlord. On 13 June 1944, he received a battlefield commission to second lieutenant; the formal commission was later completed in England. He was the first NCO in the Third Battalion to receive such a commission in Normandy. He was transferred to Easy Company and took charge of its third platoon. Shames fought with Easy Company in Operation Market Garden and volunteered for Operation Pegasus led by Frederick Heyliger. He was wounded once in his left leg during the campaigns. He then fought with the rest of E Company in the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne. In Foy, Shames and Paul Rogers knocked out a German tank with a bazooka. In Germany, he saw some of the concentration camps in which the Germans imprisoned and murdered Europe's Jews and, like many American soldiers, was deeply affected. During the exploration of Eagle's Nest, Shames found a supply of cognac labeled "for the Fuhrer's use only." He later used it to toast his oldest son's Bar Mitzvah. Just in time for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day! Stored flat in a non-smoking, climate-controlled environment. Check my feedback - it's excellent. I ask for the same consideration from you.
