Description: Lot details Seascape at French Riviera. Watercolor, ink and gouache painting. Size of the present painting is 27.8 x 19.7 centimeters. Signature Raoul Dufy can be found in the lower margin of the painting. This artwork is also marked on reverse by a previous collection mark (reference number in pencil and stamp). The work is in very good condition for its age, colors create the desired contrast, are vivid and are well preserved, but we also notice minor yellowing of the paper. Dufy developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textile as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. With this work comes a Certificate of authenticity & registration of the painting at Fine Arts Registry and a transfer of ownership. He created airy washes of light and shade, into which he would draw bold calligraphic brushstrokes. The artist's experimental use of color was influenced both by Claude Monet and his Fauvist peer Henri Matisse. “Blue is the only color which maintains its own character in all its tones it will always stay blue,” the artist mused. “Whereas yellow is blackened in its shades, and fades away when lightened; red when darkened becomes brown, and diluted with white is no longer red, but another color—pink.
