Description: Four gorgeous color woodblock prints of the FOUR SEASONS OF NIKKO (Japan) by Eiichi Kotozuka (1906-1981). Engraved and printed by Uchida Woodblock Printing Co, Ltd, Kyoto. Undated but probably mid-20th century. The set includes: 1. Taikenbyo Nitenmon Gate in Spring 2. The Avenue of Cedar Trees in Summer3. Kegon-no-take Falls in Autumn ("Kegon no Taki Shukei")4. Five-storied Pagoda in Winter (Pagoda Nikko Toshogu Shrine) Nikko, Japan, represented here, is well-known for its natural beauty, from verdant forests, rolling hills and breathtaking waterfalls to raging rivers, streams and a beautiful lake. The prints bears Kotozuka's seal in the right or left lower corner and are numbered on the reverse side. They measure about 14 inches by 10 inches in the mat. Prints are in very good condition, while mats have age toning and light foxing. Color portfolio is splitting along spine, with age toning. More about the artist: Eiichi Kotozuka was a 20th-century Japanese commercial artist and woodblock printmaker, born in Osaka and studied at the Kyoto Specialist School of Painting. In the 1940s he co-founded a co-operative publishing company called Koryokusha in an effort to gain an artistic expression free of the major houses. He was a prolific artist of the sÅsaku-hanga style, and was one of four artists who co-founded the print publishing company Koryokusha. He was noted for his prints of Japanese cultural traditions, flowers, landscapes, and wildlife.
