John Little of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, a Private in Capt. George Kimball’s Co. of Minutemen, marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, to Lexington and Concord, the First day of our War for Independence. John Little signs boldly this 1821 deed, concerning the sale of a tract of land in Peterborough, New Hampshire to probably his son, John Little.The document is in fine condition with only minor problems that being small separations in the folds. It is very neat to see that on the docket which is signed by the Regr. of Deeds, Isaac Brooks, that he has recorded that the deed on 19 APRIL, 1825, 50 Years to the date of the Lexington and Concord Fight. There is a watermark bearing the British Liberty seated with her British shield in an oval surmounted by a crown.As to the signing of two John Little’s and which is the real minuteman, I have surmised here that the signature of the signer appears to be a man show some age, with the signature performed in a rather stiff and somewhat shaky hand. With 50 years having passed since the opening day of the War and adding on at least another 20 years for Little’s age at the time (1775), I am confident that this is the right man. I will admit, that if the other John Little were a son, the lack of Junior in the signature is quite unusual.Note the included xerox of the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors page that refers to these men.
