Description: Original Signed African Folk Art Painting With Tie-In to USPS Cancer Cure Postage Stamp Original acrylic on stretched canvas painting of three African Women in landscape. Signed lower right corner, "F. White". Painting measures 20 x 24 inches, in period wood frame measuring about 21 x 25 inches. Very good condition with one or two soft indents to canvas but no fading or loss of paint. With gallery label to back of stretcher having two hand written names. Notes: An almost identical work by the same artist - but with one additional figure - appears during a google image search (see the screen-shots in the picture gallery). Some of these sites state that this 'sister' painting was used for a USPS “semipostal stamp” issued to raise money for breast cancer research. At least one of these sites named the 'Fund The Cure' stamp but this doesn't appear true. Hard to know what to make of all this but it seems to at least warrant a footnote in USPS stamp history. Below is some of the text copied from those sites: - The following image (of unknown origin) sometimes circulates with e-mailed exhortations to support breast cancer research by purchasing the Breast Cancer Research Stamp, but it is not a design featured on any stamp issued by the USPS, semi-postal or otherwise. - Somos Primos, May 2005 / Dedicated to Hispanic Heritage and Diversity Issues / Society of Hispanic Historical and Ancestral Research. - "Breast Cancer Stamp" - "Fund the Cure" U.S. stamp - Anti-Breast Cancer USPS Stamp - (This is) what the U.S.P.S. calls a “semipostal stamp,” meaning that it is priced above the normal cost of First-Class postage with the net proceeds going to a worthy cause. In the case of the breast cancer stamp, 30 percent of the net proceeds goes to the Medical Research program of the Department of Defense (for breast cancer research). Seventy percent goes to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
