Transcription of the Document: --- Providence April 17, 1782 John J. Clark Esq. Sir, In consequence of your favor of this day, it was mentioned in Town Meeting that you proposed serving as State Attorney, provided the Freemen thought proper to give you their votes. At present, you are twenty odd majority, and I imagine there will be more, as Collin is about 90 majority, Goddard 40. I cannot justly ascertain, but I believe he carries two hundred or upward of Mr. Howell, about two hundred and forty. This is the nearest best information I can give you at present. I am most respectfully, Sir, Your most obedient servant, John J. Clark To Benjamin Bourne Esq. --- Biographies of the Figures Mentioned: John J. Clarke: Born on July 8, 1740, in Richmond, Rhode Island, John J. Clarke was the son of Joseph Clarke and Sarah (Reynolds) Clarke. His military service during the Revolutionary War was distinguished; Clarke enlisted as a lieutenant in 1776 and served as a captain from 1778 to 1783, notably under Colonels Christian Dyer and Jonathan Maxon during Sullivan's Expedition. He married Sarah Gardiner in 1759/60, and they both passed away in 1836 in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York. Clarkes son, Gardner Clark, later testified to his fathers military service and character, adding to his legacy as an honest and reputable man. Benjamin Bourne: Benjamin Bourne (17551808) was a key figure in Rhode Island politics. He served as a U.S. Representative and was later appointed as a federal judge. Bourne played an influential role in Rhode Island's legal and political scenes during the Revolutionary War and early days of the United States. This document refers to his candidacy for State Attorney during the 1782 election in Providence. Collin: Although the exact identity of "Collin" is uncertain, he was likely a figure of some political prominence in Rhode Island at the time. Further research into local records may provide additional clarity on his identity. Goddard: "Goddard" likely refers to a member of the well-known Goddard family of Rhode Island. One possibility is William Goddard, a prominent journalist and publisher, who played a role in early American media and postal systems. Mr. Howell: This most likely refers to David Howell (17471824), a Rhode Island lawyer, jurist, and politician. Howell was active during the Revolutionary War period and served in various legal and political roles, including as a delegate to the Continental Congress and later as a federal judge. Historical Significance: This document represents a critical moment in Rhode Islands post-Revolutionary War political landscape. The letter sheds light on the electoral process and political dynamics of the time, while also linking significant military and civic figures. John J. Clarkes involvement in the Revolutionary War and his observations of the election results for Benjamin Bourne's candidacy for State Attorney make this document a valuable addition to any collection of early American history. All research and relevant historical context will be included with the purchase, providing valuable background for collectors and historians alike.
