Richmond Palace, London, River Thames, Wenceslas Hollar, 1882 Print

Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph 1882 Print published to illustrate the history of printmakingScene: Richmond Palace (on the River Thames, London) Artist: Wenceslaus (Wenzel) Hollar (1607-1677), Bohemian etcher. Engraver: Paul Dujardin (of Paris) Richmond Palace, with a group of people in the foreground who, one assumes, have just disembarked from a covered rowing boat. The man at the center is remarkably like James I. Richmond palace began as a manor house at Sheen (Surrey) and was much used by Edward III, who died there. Henry V restored it and, after a disastrous fire in 1497, Henry VII rebuilt it on the grand scale, giving it his own title of Richmond. Mary used it frequently and Elizabeth died there, but during the civil wars it fell into decay. This print was bound and published in 1882 by Seeley, Jackson and Halliday, of London, in Hamerton's work, The Graphics Arts. THIS IS NOT A 16th Century Engraving Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) was an English landscape artist and author. His book, Etching and Etchers (1866) became a standard work on the subject, and established him as one of the leading art critics of his day. In 1870, he founded The Portfolio, a monthly periodical, each number of which consisted of a monograph upon some artist or group of artists. In 1882 he issued The Graphic Arts (the source of this print), a finely illustrated work on the technique of the great masters of various arts and printing. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
