Description: A rare, personally signed copy of Sabatini's Machiavellian classic, inscribed to playwright and thespian Henry Hamilton, who performed in Sabatini's Bardelys The Magnificent! No date but likely from 1912 (based on Sabatini's signature and the ads in the back). This would have been given to Hamilton a year after his role in Bardelys. The book features many striking illustrated black-and-white plates (one plate is gently loose with some light chipping to the edges, as pictured). Some foxing/browning from age. Overall in very good shape, some light rubbing to the black boards, sturdy binding, with the signature from Sabitini to the back of the title page. Cesare Borgia was an Italian cardinal and "condottiero" (mercenary leader). His story was a major inspiration for Machiavelli's 16th century political treatise, "The Prince," which included many seemingly positive references to the murderous life of Cesare Borgia. While known for his swashbuckling historical adventure novels (Scaramouche, Capatain Blood), Sabatini takes a turns here to an historical account of the Borgias, set at the dawn of the Renaissance for inspiration.
