Description: JAMES LONGSTREET (1821-1904) served as a Confederate general during the Civil War and reported to Gen. Robert E. Lee. He was a corps commander for most of the battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia and briefly with Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee. Longstreet made significant contributions to most major Confederate victories, primarily in the Eastern Theater. One page, 8 ½ x 11, ALS, from Paul Meerscheidt, tax collector in Bexar County, Texas, San Antonio, October 22. 1901, to Longstreet in Washington, DC, informing him of taxes due for tracts of land in Texas. “The taxes for the year 1901 on your tracts of land amount to $21.56 upon receipt of this amount your tax receipt will be forwarded. “I suppose this land is unimproved and not under fence. If you will let me know the amount you ask for the same, I will make an effort to sell it for you. “Very Respectfully yours “Paul Meerscheidt” The verso contains docketing, “Paul Meerscheidt Tax Collector,” possibly in Longstreet’s hand.
