Donetsk Oblast borders Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts in the west, Kharkiv Oblasts in the northwest, Luhansk Oblasts of Ukraine and Rostov Oblasts of Russia in the northeast and east. From the south, the region is washed by the Sea of Azov. The coin was put into circulation on December 26, 2017. It belongs to the series "Oblasts of Ukraine". The obverse of the coin features: at the top, the small State Coat of Arms of Ukraine, around the inscriptions: "NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE" (above), "FIVE HRYVEN" (below), on the right — the logo of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine; in the center - a stylized composition symbolizing the region: a fragment of the region's flag, under which is the minting year of the coin "2017" (right), the Holy Dormition Sviatohirskaya Lavra (left), a terrycon, a fragment of the Ukrainian steppe with a stone woman (right); below - sunflower flowers, miner's lantern and hard hat.The reverse of the coin depicts a stylized palm tree of Mertsalov in a wreath of oak leaves - the main elements of the coat of arms of the Donetsk region, the inscriptions: "DONETSK OBLAST" (above), "FOUNDED IN 1932" (below) are placed around the circle.
