Description: Vintage Craftsman (by Sargent) #3742 (1963 - 64) Smooth Plane (= to Stanley #4) -- This plane is 9" long, and the cutter is 2" wide. The characteristics of this plane are: 1) Knob and tote are made of a hard type rubber "Gutta Percha", however, the Craftsman Study Guide calls them plastic, 2) the frog finish is red, 3) the bed is finish is "light gray", 4) the cutter is stamped "CRAFTSMAN", "MADE IN U.S.A. BL" and "619.3742" on separate lines, 5) the depth adjusting knob has three (3) ridges and two (2) grooves with diagonal knurling, 6) the cutter keyhold is up, 7) the lateral adjustment lever top has an inverted "U" thumb hold, 8) the knob nut/screw type is phillips, 9) the "Y" yoke construction is two (2) piece pressed and 10) the sides of the plane are "grooved", 11) "MADE IN U.S.A." is cast in body in front of tote.
